We love the summer! Beach, pool, naked kids, long days, summer fruit, family time, camping… And the list goes on.
But the mosquitos can really rain on our summer parade. From itchy sores to keeping the kids up at night. Not fun.
Our approach to preventing bites is wide: screened windows, geranium planted at window sills, gambusia fish (larvae eating fish) in the pond and water pit and fans in the bedrooms (it is surprisingly effective at keeping the Mosquitos out of the room!).
In addition, I make these mosquito repellant body butter bars that the kids named mosquito go away. They include infused oils and essential oils and are especially great as they require no packaging!
This recipe uses citronella essential oil blend as well as lemongrass essential oil. Both oils are photosensitive, so they cannot be used on the skin before or during exposure to the sun. Use this recipe for dusk and nighttime mosquito protection.
Citronella essential oil and lemon essential oil are safe to use on babies from 6 months and up. Lemongrass essential oil is safe for children two years old and up. To modify the recipe accordingly. (Lavender essential oil is safe from 3 months and up.)
